Despite a snowy January that resulted in the meeting being cancelled and kids out of school for multiple Sean Joycedays with area schools being closed, we still fit in an effective month. We kicked off 2011 with a strong First Friday Dance with approximately 180 students, assisted with the Scout’s Pinewood Derby by judging cars and being the race starter as well as serving coffee and donuts.

In case you missed the Jan. 14 edition of The Catholic Key, there was an excellent article “Respect Life Office works closely with Knights of Columbus to promote life” that explained how this joint effort is positively impacting pro-life efforts. One of the most effective and personal ways to reach pregnant women considering an abortion is to have them view their baby on an ultrasound. I still remember when my wife was pregnant with each of our daughters and we watched the ultrasound screen and could actually view our baby’s development and beating heart for the first time. We talked after our first ultrasound and I have recalled it countless times since those days in 1993 and 1997 that I couldn’t imagine someone having an abortion if they had viewed the power of life that they helped create. The Knights of Columbus Ultrasound Initiative program is providing funding assistance in making such machines a reality for specific pregnancy centers. The article can be viewed here.

At the February meeting we’ll share information associated with the “Bishop’s Blast” letter that is a statewide coordinated recruitment effort utilizing the support of our Bishops. Hopefully, this will assist in getting other men in our parish interested in joining our council. As a reminder, if you have anyone interested in becoming a Knight, please contact David Tracewell (Membership Chairman & Insurance Field Agent) at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it / 816.668.4641 or me at the contact information below.

In order to assist in 2011 dues collection, please remember that payments can be mailed or dropped off at the parish office and prompt payment enables the council to stay current on invoices we have to pay to the Missouri State Council as well as Supreme. If you have any questions related to your dues statements, please make sure you follow up with Doug Hayworth, Financial Secretary, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Also, don’t forget to email Doug and copy me, if you happen to have a change with any of your contact information such as telephone number, email address or mailing address. You can also call me with this updated information if you don’t have email.

Knight of the Year
Kevin BakerKevin Baker
Kevin was not only involved in many council activities, but also involved with the 4th Degree Assembly and in other ministries here at St. Therese, such as the 5 p.m. Mass choir. Unfortunately for us, but apparently it worked out for him personally, he was able to move out of Kansas City and closer to his family. Still, we didn’t want him to forget his time here at St. Therese and our Pope John Paul I Council.
Family of the Year
Eric ParryCarla & Eric Parry
As a council we are fortunate for this couple as they are fun to work with and it’s pretty much a 2 for 1 deal. When we have an event you know you that if Eric can work, Carla will be right there as well, so it truly helps out at events such as the KS Speedway, serving at the Fish Dinners or Ice Cream social as well as at the First Friday Dance. It was only two years ago that they attended this dinner & Eric wasn’t even a Knight yet. Since then he was Rookie of the Year and now Family of the Year – Congratulations to Eric & Carla Parry!
Special Recognition
Continued support of the council

Dale FickDale Fick
Among other items, Dale is a Charter Member, past Grand Knight, was a District Deputy, and is involved with the Special Olympics and serves as Vocation Chairman for the KC-St. Joseph Diocese. He has chaired countless events through the years and is a go-to guy in the council who keeps us pointed in the right direct.
John Lusero
John LuseroJohn is a long- standing member who probably has one of the busiest schedules with his work travels and his involvement in council activities as well as Serra Club. When John is in town, you can count on him to work most events. For several years he has chaired our annual retreat, the Valentine's Dance for assisted living homes, as well as our efforts with the auction and working numerous other events each year.

The council’s APPRECIATION goes out to Ed Burgess and Ray Miller for coordinating the Council's Appreciation Dinner for the food and raffle. Kim Miller assisted Ed at the check in table. Ray also donated several items for the raffle.

The 2011 DUES collection process has been going on for the past couple of months, in one form or another. One form, and the easiest method to get your dues invoice each year, is via email. If you have supplied me with an email address, you should have received your 2001 Dues Invoice immediately after New Year’s Day. If not, please send me an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

If you don’t have an email address, I mailed several 2011 Invoices out during the second week of January. If you have not received one, please call me at 816-505-1555 and let me know.

Here are the items that appear on our invoices this year:

What does this mean? First of all, it means this Knight has been credited with 25 years of service within our ranks and has attained the age of 65 during the fraternal year. With respect to dues, they are reduced to $10.00 per year, an amount which allows the council to cover what the council pays for Supreme per capita ($3.50), Catholic Advertising assessment ($1.00) and MO State Council per capita ($4.75) for a total of $9.25. Honorary members are also encouraged to donate $7.50 as a pledge for RIB (Religious Information Bureau) for a total of $17.50.

What does this mean? First of all, it means this Knight has been credited with 25 years of service within our ranks and has attained the age of 70 during the fraternal year.

With respect to dues, they are relieved from paying memberships dues to the Knights. From a council’s obligation standpoint, the only related costs associated with Honorary Life membership is the annual donation we pledge to the RIB (Religious Information Bureau).
